The presidents of six Alberta universities took home more than $3 million in 2015, with some cashing the largest paycheques in the country for their post, say new figures published online Thursday.

The University of Alberta spent about $919,000 compensating two presidents in 2015 — $580,000 for outgoing president Indira Samarasekera, and another $339,000 to new president David Turpin for his first six months on the job.

Turpin’s annual salary, not including perks, is about $500,000, university board chairman Michael Phair said.
